I'll post what I've said in an earlier discussion, but let me say first that I really loved this film and actually prefer it to the first on many levels. There is too much gore and for this kind of film it wasn't really necessary it's more torture porn than Hostel imho, The claw-hammer damage on the train is ott - it just wouldn't rip flesh that much, many of the limb breaks are too easy and too extreme. These main characters bodies are too tough (multiple slices from the curved blades at the end don't really slow either fighter down until the end, the other undercover cop is able to run and drive with a gunshot to the calf) and the minor characters (the gore-fodder) too soft.
The Raid 2 also suffers from gore overload. You may not have realised that this is happening again and again because it actually works quite well - but it takes too long to set up some of the action scenes and so there is a lot less pace than in the Raid 1. This is done multiple times in the movie and the method is ramped up and up culminating in the kitchen staff leaving being the final reveal - oooh, it's about to go DOWN. What they tried to do instead was set everything up slowly so you know its coming, but you don't know quite what or how, and then there is a reveal (the hammers coming out of the bag, the bar suddenly being empty, the toilet door opening, etc) before it all kicks off. Each chunk of action is interspersed with what you know is a brief respite and there isn't anything like that in the Raid 2. The Raid 1 is a desperate fight for life, attempting to escape from a trap. The Raid 1 has one thing going for it that the Raid 2 cannot match (and someone else mentioned it elsewhere here) - tension. There is a lot in this film for action fans to love and I want to see Iko Uwais take on Tony Jaa now. The car chase was mental and that final fight in the kitchen were brilliantly executed and both are far superior pieces of action cinema than anything in the first film. The Raid 2 has some amazing action scenes in it. So I'm going to be the only dissenting voice here - I far preferred the 1st film.
